Investing In Growing Businesses

Like Madam C.J. Walker, Shonta Mckinney knows how to grow hair and has made a business of it. A gift for black hair care took root alongside an entrepreneur spirit began to grow when Mckinney was a teenager. " In 1998 when I was 18 years old, I became interested in formulating natural hair products," she explained. " I started getting clients with severely damaged hair. They were in need of hair treatments. I tried to find healthy treatments at local beauty supply stores. I could not find any treatments I could trust with no chemicals added. I became very interested and continued to study and test natural plant based ingredients. I wanted to develop products for clients who lost their hair from from the effects of diabetes, thyroids, cancer, alopecia, poor diets as well as poor hair maintenance." Mckinney's persistence resulted in the founding of Complete Length Hair Products, which offers a line of all natural hair care products that nourishes the hair and scalp, stimulates growth and maintains a healthy body of hair. " My products are extraordinary, because they are all natural and contain quality ingredients with the precise quality of vitamins and essential oils to be effective, "adds Mckinney. While African American women are said to spend half a trillion dollars on hair care, owning a business that caters to all womens needs still comes with growing pains. " The obstacles I've encountered have been the lack of support from my own people," says Mckinney. " When I was 20 years old, I was conducting a promotional event for my product line in a local beauty supply store. I talked to an African American woman in her early thirties about the Complete Length Hair Products. I told her all of the products qualities, and she was amazed. She then picked up two different bottles of Complete Length because she could not decide on which product she wanted. Then, she asked me who made the products. I told her I did, and she looked shocked. She sat the two bottles down and said she would probably get the products the next time. It was a great but sad learning experience for me. But, the lesson Mckinney hopes the public learns is that Complete Length Hair Products has the answer to any hair issue from a health conscious aspect. "Unlike big corporations who don't know their customers or their individual needs, I have worked with my clients for years and learned firsthand what they need and desire," says Mckinney. " I admire Madam C.J. Walker, because she built a flourishing business during a time where black people had limited ability to do anything let alone become a successful entrepreneur. Madam C.J. Walker also considered herself as a culturist, who helped to grow hair - not straighten. I have the same views that women should pay more attention to the health of their hair.
